In January 2025, multiple wildfires broke out in different parts of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. These wildfires were exacerbated by drought conditions, dry vegetation, and severe Santa Ana winds that at times exceeded 80 mph.
As of now, there are five notable fires affecting this part of Southern California:
To date, the January 2025 LA county wildfires have displaced more than 150,000 residents from their homes, damaged or destroyed approximately 2,000 structures, and caused five deaths.

The Palisades Fire started on the morning of January 7, 2025 in the Santa Monica Mountains. It spread quickly, damaging more than 1,000 structures in the Pacific Palisades.
According to reports from the Associated Press (AP), the Palisades Fire is the most destructive fire in Los Angeles history. The AP cited an AccuWeather estimate that the preliminary damage ranges from $52–$57 billion.

The Eaton Fire started on the evening of January 7, 2025 in Eaton Canyon, which is part of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The Hurst Fire started late in the evening on January 7, 2025 behind Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar. According to a report from the San Fernando Valley Sun, a witness heard a transformer on a hill exploding late in the evening before being told to evacuate by police.
